I have to say I would take Gilbert's science with a grain of salt, since he is a shapist. This is the guy who called Turin's updated vibrational theory (including his paper and experiements) "implausible" - when he snarkily reviewed Chandler's "Emperor of Scent" for Nature Neuroscience. This was the same journal who famously rejected Turin's main paper on the topic, which was later presented in the journal Chemical Senses.
Gilbert et al's Shape theory has serious holes and inconsistencies that they have serious trouble explaining away; even one of the papers that the Nobel was awarded in this area had to be retracted this year, since its findings were impossible to duplicate.
And yet they castigate Vibration - one suspects because it threatens their own collective body of work.
That's too bad, since Turin's work makes a lot more sense as a system. I suggest reading (Candler's and) his books, including the more technical "Secret of Scent."
